Falmouth Hospital board-certified orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine physician Donald O'Malley, M.D., is offering new hope for patients with chronic shoulder joint pain. With the reverse total shoulder joint replacement surgery, Dr. O'Malley reverses the anatomy of the shoulder, placing a synthetic socket where the ball was located and a synthetic ball in the position formerly occupied by the socket. "The procedure allows patients to raise their arms up much higher after surgery than with traditional techniques and totally eliminates the pain", says Dr. O'Malley. (From Currents Magazine, Issue 7 Summer 2005)
Separated shoulder and torn tendons. Injured playing hockey, the Cataumet resident had let it heal by itself, only to find it had healed incorrectly. With reconstruction surgery and physical therapy taken care of close to home and family, Dr. O'Malley set it straight and sent Jared back to the ice. "It healed great after surgery. I'm back to playing hockey - I'm ready to take another hit!"

Complex Shoulder Surgery Retired orthopedic surgeon and gardener Dr. Tom Gregg, facing rotator cuff shoulder surgery to restore range of motion and relieve pain, chose Donald O'Malley, M.D. orthopedic surgeon to perform his surgery. Dr. Gregg was home the same day, "There was no need for me to travel to Boston when the same sophisticated techniques are being done here with more personal approach."

Fishing after Foot Surgery I am writing this letter of commendation to Dr. Donald O'Malley. After a terrible accident a few years ago, I was faced with the possibility of having a prosthetic leg. When the accident took place, I was rushed to the local hospital in a rural NY community (I own some land there). I was told to return home and seek an orthopedic surgeon. Upon my return I looked up several doctors with no success until I called Dr. O'Malley's office and spoke with Laura his receptionist, who patiently listened to my tale of woes. Laura then advised me to go to Falmouth Hospital and seek emergency treatment. At Falmouth Hospital, the Emergency Room doctor looked at my x-rays, and immediately referred me to Dr. Donald O'Malley, who was the orthopedic surgeon on call at the time. After being seen by Dr. O'Malley the following morning, I was then admitted for surgery later that day. After 4 surgeries in a ten day span, I was told that there was an 80% chance of keeping my foot (as opposed to the 100% chance I would have lost it before the operations). 6 weeks later I started working again part-time (20 hours a week). I can not express in words the gratitude I feel towards Dr. O'Malley and the way he helped keep my dignity intact. He was willing to take the time to help me become whole again. I was able to get my life back. He afforded me the pleasure to once again be able to play with my 3 & 6 year old boys and go fishing with my wife.

Laura, Dr. O'Malley and staff: Thank you for my successful ACL surgery and recovery. At 8:40 am yesterday I finally made the decision to run the Falmouth Road Race. I got the last bus to Woods Hole and finished in 1 hr. 15 minutes, without a problem. Today I am a little sore from head to toes but my knee feels fine. Again I thank all of you for a job well done. Dear Dr. O’Malley, David and I enjoyed your lecture last week at the Coonamessett Inn. It was good to have the shoulder problems discussed as well as the treatments that have been developed. We thought that you covered the subject well for the potential patient and the concerns you have as a physician/surgeon. We enjoyed the bit about the patients you would not handle too. Sincerely,
Fay LaVigne
Dear Dr. O’Malley, Your conversations with the students and written feedback help sharpen their thinking and focus their research, as well as give them even more of the pleasures of science. Along with our thanks, we enclose a list of the winners to satisfy your curiosity. Sincerely,

Dear Dr. O'Malley: I am BLESSED that you were on call when I broke my wrist. “Thank you” really doesn’t say what I feel. I am able to quilt once again something I feared would be gone from my life forever. And, as you can see, I can also write legibly! THANK YOU for realizing the operation would give this old gal the chance to live the rest of my years productively! Please accept this small token of my appreciation and know I thanked God for your EXCELLENT care! Sincerely, Judy Stainbrook
