Meet Dr. O'Malley
After a 16-year Navy career, Dr. Donald O'Malley settled in Cape Cod to practice Orthopedic Surgery. While practicing sports medicine, he has quickly established himself as "The Shoulder Guy," performing complex reconstructive procedures like rotator cuff repair through the arthoscope as outpatient surgery. In addition, Dr. O'Malley performs total shoulder replacement for arthritis and posttraumatic conditions. Dr. O'Malley has been a leader in developing the total shoulder replacement program at Falmouth Hospital, and he also enjoys an excellent reputation for non-surgical care of disorders of the musculoskeletal system, including the shoulder.
Dr. O'Malley graduated from Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) where he continues to serve as Assistant Professor of Surgery. He trained at the Bethesda Maryland Naval Hopital under Dr. Scott Steinman, a world-renowned shoulder and upper extremity surgeon who now practices at the Mayo Clinic. Bethesda Naval Hospital is also known as "The President's Hospital," where sitting Presidents of the United States have gone to have their orthopedic surgery. Dr. O'Malley participated on the team that treated a sitting Vice President and a current Supreme Court Justice for Achilles Tendon Rupture. He continues to assist the White House Medical Unit when Presidental trips come to the region. As a Naval Flight Surgeon, Dr. O'Malley has been a member of the Space Shuttle Recovery Team, and has worked with the Navy Flight Demonstration Team, The Blue Angels.
Dr. O'Malley's goal when settling in Falmouth was to merge the high tech ability of university-level hopitals with the one-on-one doctor/patient relationship seen in small community hospitals. Always a researcher, having won the Naval Research Competition in 1993, Dr. O'Malley is constantly monitoring statistics such as infection rates, blood loss, operative time, functional results, and patient satisfaction to compare Falmouth Hospital with the larger Boston Hospital Centers. He can unequivocally stand behind his belief that the same high quality of care seen in Boston can be conveniently and consistently delivered to Cape Cod patients at Falmouth Hospital.
Dr. O'Malley is very active in the local sporting arena, involving international Olympic athletes, national NCAA athletes and local college & high school athletes. He is the Medical Co-Director of the world famous Falmouth Road Race & Falmouth Mile, where he has treated past and present Olympians from all over the world. Dr. O'Malley is the Team Physician for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League, where all the top NCAA Division One baseball players perform during the summer. He also participates on the Medical Team for the Cape Cod Marathon and the Falmouth Main Street Mile. Having cared for and treated elite Olympians and professional athletes, Dr. O'Malley strives to bring the same level of care to all local residents of Cape Cod. |
